Ash brown doesn't refer to the shade (the darkness or lightness of the color), it refers to the tone. Ash is a cool, usually green-blue-violet based tone, usually used to neutralize overly golden/orange/brassy colors. It's rare that I use an ash color by itself on a client because most people need some warmonth. Ash can easily wash people out or make them look like a zombie.
