I used to use bed head's shampoo and conditioner. But one time I was broke and just grabbed some drugstore shampoo (Aussie). And well to be honest I saw no difference in my hair, if not improvement. But is bed head just not a good brand? Or is the expensive shampoo over-rated?

Expensive shampoo is more often than not totally overrated. The majority of shampoos contain a mixture of surfactants, silicones and moisturizing agents. Sometimes these things are sourced differently or appear in a different ratio, but for the most part formulations aren't dramatically different.
Moral: always read the ingredients label.
