Hi girls, Just wanted to ask for advice. I've been dying my hair from dark to light and vice versa for quite some time now. The last time I changed my hair was 3 months ago, dyed it super black. Now I wanted to go back to light brown, but when I dyed it only the top part of my hair lightened and maybe 3/4 of my hair is still super dark! what am I going to do? Thanks.

It is very hard to cover up black without some type of bleach. The top of your head got the dye because it the fresh or virgin hair. You should go to a professional and they can do it in steps without damaging your hair to much.

Here's how this works:

You dye your hair, artificial pigments are deposited. When you touch up your roots, MORE dye gets deposited on your ends (if you follow box instructions). Ultimately all that crap accumulates...think of it as layers of paint.

Lifting your hair caused the top part of your hair to lift a little because it had less pigment on it (I.e. less layers of paint to strip off).

What you need to do is taking some of that paint off. I'd recommend shampooing the flip out of your hair for a week with a clarifying shampoo to fade out some color, then use a sulfur-based color remover. It's much less damaging than bleach. You'll be able to dye over it again after you apply a good protein conditioner to even out the porosity.

Also, stop coloring all of your hair when you're doing your roots. Do a root application only and pick up a separate semi-permanent toner in the right color to refresh the overall appearance.
