I've been considering getting a red lipstick for a while, and I've been told that lipliner is useful to shape the lips and prevent feathering ( what exactly is feathering? ). I do not wear lipstick often and have never used lip liner before, however so I have no idea how to pick one out, and would prefer to not have to if it wasn't relatively important. Tips? Advice?

Lip liner isnt a must have for me so if you want one take one from the drugstore. Red is the essential but like other colors I dont think so!

Red isn't an essential. I never use lip liner and it is almost always red that I wear. My red always looks and stays great, along with my pink. It isn't essential, but it does have some perks, and some brands the quality isn't high enough that lip liner does help a lot.

To me lip liner looks like you have something at the top and bottom of your lips! Leave it at home!

It's not necessary at all. If you have a good lip stick then it will be ok. Lip liner just helps to define the lip and make it stand out more. It's kind of a lip decoration.

Lip liner helps your lipstick stay on longer, so it depends when you will be wearing if it.

I don't use it because my lips are already full, it's not a must its an option.

I never use lip liner but for some people it helps keep the lipstick in place longer. Feathering is when lipstick travels outside your natural lip line via fine lines. I personally don't have a problem with lines around my lips but a lot of woman get them as they age. I hope that helps:-)

Try "no bleeding lips secret lip liner" it's awesome!! You can get it online or at shoppers drug mart (Canada). It is so awesome because it is clear and that way you don't have to match you lip liner color and the lipstick doesn't bleed it's like magic!!

I heard that the wax in just plain old chapstick helps prevent feathering, if you do want to try a lip liner, go for a nude shade even if you want to use red or pink lipstick or gloss. It looks much nicer.

I don't even use it for the purpose of preventing feathering. I use it to do ombre looks or to just layer under the lipstick to make it pop with further color intensity or sometimes just fill in my lips and slap on some clear lipgloss. I love being creative with lip liners.

I use lipliner to shape my lips ( I overdraw to make them seem fuller) and I also shade in my whole lip with liner so it acts as a base for my lipcolor and give it a little more staying power.

Does using the lipliner as a base have a large effect on the color or texture of the lipstick? ( possibly a dumb questio but like I said I've never used it before... )

Lipliner is not mandatory but it can be fun. Its nice to use as a base for your lipstick to stick to, giving it more opacity and staying power. I like playing with it to line my lips in different shapes/styles. It can be used as lipstick if need be, and its fun to use different combos of lip products/liners.

Imperative if you want to your lipstick to wear longer. It's even more important with bright colors. And no you don't need a red lipliner to wear red lipstick! Nude is actually better! It will help your red to be more true. I love NYX's lipliners I use there nude one under most of my lipsticks! You should fill in your entire lip with the liner, not just the edges! :) good luck'

I dont use lip liner any more but now with the new ombré look it is essential or you can use it to make your lipstick last longer and use it all over your lips after you lined it

Lip liner isn't necessarily a must have item. However, it is very helpful. Aside from keeping your lipstick from feathering, or smudging all over the place, it also makes it last longer and apply more evenly. My favorite thing about it is the fact that you can mix up your own lip colors simply by pairing different colored lip liners with lip sticks/glosses. Its a fun way to experiment with different looks without having to buy a million different lipsticks.
