You dont really need it for the curl. You could use it to curl your lashes near the roots, it might lenghten your lashes a bit more but you don't need that either if you ask me.

But it's about trying things out and seeing what works for you right. I'd buy an inexpensive one to start with and try it out :)

Yeah its looks really nice and natural i actually have one from forever 21 they dont have to be expensive
