Go to a salon!!!! I'm a hairstylist and so many girls have come to me with hair they had black and tries to lighten themselves and it never turns out well!! They need do lift the hair with bleach then put a toner color on your hair to make it caramel. It's the safest thing because your hair type and everything has to be handled a certain way. Someone with thick strong hair needs higher developer than fine hair. A good stylist will know how to handle it. (Not a walk in walmart place)

Mm, I'm doing this myself though. I'm pretty good with hair but I was wondering what would be easiest/best

Probably just going to Sally's too

The best is not the easiest. There is no easy way to go from black to caramel. It's a double process that's hard on anyone's hair. Go to Sally's beauty. It's the best you can buy without being a stylist. Still not great. Tell them what you plan to do and good luck with what they say. You'd need bleach with a developer good for your hair type than the right toner color and the developer to go with that. Do the bleach parts first, wash it, towel dry, apply toner. Then shampoo, condition, and style as usual. Good luck to ya. Just to be clear! I do not suggest doing this yourself but we all do what we want so I hope it works out for ya.

please don't do it yourself. as a hairstylist I have also come across many people coming in for color corrections. I wouldn't go to sallys either. most people they hire in my hometown arent even hairstylists...please go to a stylists...its more money spent but will be worth it. just my advice... but if you decide to do it yourself be careful and be sure. :)

My thoughts exactly Kerri!! I'm seriously terrified for anyone to attempt it without the schooling we hairstylists go through. There's so much you're not aware of!! They aren't stylist at Sally's! Hinge the "good luck"! Sorry Lauren but truly not a good idea to do yourself.

I actually don't like Sally's. meh, it's hard without the right stuff. But if I did a bleach and zig zag parting with the lift in a 30 volume in foil and then after washed, toner, then dye?

No heat though.

If you're in school and working in a salon will one or the other not do it? I'm glad you don't like Sally's. Both school and the salons I worked in before would do my hair for practice and what not. We can't see or feel your hair so I'm not sure what developer you should use. Toner is usually what gives you the Carmel in the end. You're hair would be so porous after lifting that permanent color will go too dark therefore it's harder to predict the outcome than with toner.

then have an instructor do it... I'm getting the vibe that you're not far enough in your studies to know. hence why you're asking. best bet....and I stick by it.. a professional...

I still went to a professional... even in school. she talked me through the process as she did mine.

Ive been doing hair for 25 years. Go to a salon. Red and black are the 2 hardest colors to get out if the hair. I dont care "how good you are with hair". Nothing works and it takes FOREVER to lift.

I'd maybe suggest stripping out as much of the black as you can with something like elimin8. Then move on to a bleach which might take a couple processes as stated above. Then depending on what you get it to chose your toner. I'd suggest lightening it to 1 shade lighter than what u think u want and then putting the caramel toner on top. Buttttt if you couldn't get there with the bleaching Processes use something with a blue/violet base just to tone out SOME of the orange color you're left with. Mind you it won't take cut out all of the brassiness which is what you're going for with the caramel color. Goodluck. Here if u need me!

Also.... It will be alot of rinsing an drying in this process so make sure you have timmmmme!! Lots lol. I used 40 vol with heat 5/6 times in one night to get to where I am. Plus toning twice. But I am naturally very resistant to lifting.
