In this video, I share my henna application, how I mix my henna, where I purchase it and what to look for when you buy henna.
Henna as a Colorant
Henna stains your hair and your skin either an auburn or burgundy/maroon color depending on the crop and lawsone (plant dye) content.
The lighter the natural color of your hair is, the more visible the color change will be. If you have dark hair like me, you'll be able to catch glimpses of the color when outdoors. Over time, multiple henna applications become more visible.
Why Use Henna?
While henna is used to add color to the hair (full grey coverage can be achieved), the primary reason for using henna is conditioning. Henna mimics a protein treatment, leaving the hair strong but a bit dry. It must be balanced out (like a protein treatment) with a moisturizing deep conditioner).
Chase With a Moisturizing Conditioner (Protein Free)
I use the generic version of Matrix Biolage Balm after every henna. I sit with it on while donning a plastic cap and sitting under the dryer for 15 minutes. This allows for the penetration of the product into my hair so that the moisture balance can be achieved.
