Our periods. It's not something we like to talk about...if I even mention anything about the "P" word or sanitary pads to my boyfriend, he covers his ears and starts singing. But we really do need to start talking about it! Maybe not about the intricacies, but about the things we use for our periods. Are they safe? Or can they do us harm? I am speaking of....the pad and the tampon.
For years, I used pads and eventually tampons without thought. When I started going organic, I thought about the safety of the sanitary products I was using.
Most conventional pads and tampons are pristine white. Do you think they started that way? Absolutely not...the products are bleached with chlorine and the resulting byproduct of chlorine is dioxin. Dioxin is a toxic chemical linked with endometrioisis, ovarian cancer, and hormone dysfunction to name a few. The producers claim the amount of dioxin in a tampon or pad is insignificant. But dioxin can accumulate in fat stores. How many pads or tampons does a woman use in her lifetime? At least 15,000. Do you want this toxin collecting in your body?
Most sanitary products are also made from synthetic cotton, which may be genetically modified, wood fluff pulp, and rayon, another synthetic material used for it's absorbent power. Rayon also contains dioxin. In addition, the cotton is laced with pesticides. And we are putting these things in an extremely delicate area.
Ever purchased the lightly scented pads? Well the fragrance is synthetic and can lead to irritation, allergies, and hormone dysfunction. I hate the scent of synthetic fragrance and find it appaling in a pad!
There are other, safer options available for women.
Maxim is a natural feminine hygiene company which makes tampons, sanitary pads, panty liners, maternity pads, and other organic cotton products. When I discovered Maxim, I knew I'd found a winner.
Here are some of the distinguishing features of Maxim Hygiene Products:
Made of certified organic and natural cotton- for ultimate softness
Chlorine and dioxin free
Synthetic free
Wood fluff pulp free
Hypoallergenic and Irritation free
Eco-friendly
We never really think of the environmental impact of our sanitary products. The ones made of wood fluff pulp and synthetics are not biodegradable. This is one thing I really like about Maxim's products- they are made of renewable cotton, with less of an environmental impact and are completely biodegradable. Whoever thought you could help save the world with your pads?
I was able to try a variety of products from Maxim:
Classic Contour Pads Regular Unscented- Excellent pad for daily use
Ultra Thin Winged Pads Daytime Unscented- Great choice if you prefer a thinner pad, it's comparable (and much healthier than) Always or Stayfree
Ultra Thin Winged Pads Overnight Unscented- Perfect size and length for night use
Ultra Thin Contour Pantiliners- Great for the light days
Organic Cardboard Applicator Tampons- I don't usually use tampons, but I wanted to see how these felt. They've very comfortable but gave me some challenges when putting them on...probably because I'm not used to using tampons and there was no plastic applicator.
Overall, I felt very confident and comfortable using all the products. The pads and liners were very soft and absorbed well. I so appreciated the fact that I was putting safe and gentle materials near my delicate parts.
The Maxim site is a wonderful resource, not only to purchase the products, but for information about how to have a healthy period.
So because I got to try the products and I really love my readers...guess what??
Now you get to try them!
