NOTE: I must make it clear that i am talking about "western" BB creams and not the "non western" ones. So any comments on this subject refer to "western BB creams". I will get some Asian BB creams to test and review :)

Originally formulated in Germany it was initially used by dermatologists to help laser surgery patients protect, soothe and refine highly sensitive skin while providing light coverage for post-laser scars, acne and other blemishes.
BB creams come in a variety of different formulations and qualities. Some are said to have skin whitening or brightening properties. Others are anti-acne, some are anti-wrinkle, some are intended to even out skin tone, and yet others to lighten blemish scars. BB creams are sometimes used like a primer under foundation and if tinted may even replace foundation and some newer ones will have functions of primer, foundation, moisturizer, sun block, pore minimization and skin refining together which can save time and money in make-up
In recent years BB cream has gained a huge following for its skin-regenerating functions and is now also widely used in Asia to provide natural-looking skin coverage. It has been named "the secret of Korean actresses",[2] which gained it large exposure in Asian markets.
A moisturiser? A primer? A foundation? A concealer? A sunblock? Covers acne? Yes, thats what BB creams can do ... apparently.
BB Cream really is trying to be everything to everyone and if its not careful will be nothing to no one. In truth a BB cream is nothing more than a tinted moisturiser. Suddenly not so exciting is it!
Illamasqua Skin Base claim to be a BB cream (or inspired by BB cream) yet in truth this really is more like a sheer/light coverage foundation rather than a BB cream.
If you have great skin that requires minimal coverage then BB creams might suit your needs. If you're someone requiring coverage then BB creams are unlikely for you. On me they didn't hide any broken capillaries or excess redness on my cheeks despite most claiming to concealer all types of pigmentation or discolouration. To be fair Illamasqua Skin Base did - but like i said - i feel this is more a foundation than a BB cream.
Jumping on the bandwagon are Garnier with its Blemish Balm", Germaine De Capuccini (£49.25) Dior Snow White Reveal UK Protection Cream (£36.50),Estee Lauder's Cyber White Brilliant Cells Extra Intensive BB (£26) Mac's Prep + Prime BB Cream (£21) and Clinique's Age Defence BB Cream (£19). Phew! Often times you'll find the shade range limited also, meaning more times than not if you're light/medium skin you're in luck. If you're bronze and deeper - sorry, we don't' cater to you. Sigh.
Don't believe any claims about it not clogging pores. There is no way of testing this in the real world. Its beauty bullshit at best.
While this wants to be the next big thing it really isn't'.Its a new word for a tinted moisturiser.

My feelings exactly!!! After a few weeks of using a BB I see no change on my skin or makeup. BB creams are just the fad of the moment but as makeup artist we are expected to know about them and carry them in our kits.....Oh well!!! Wait a few months there will be something else on the market that you "must" purchase.

this is so helpful and I totally agree! I just got a BB cream for the second time because my skin recently started to break out, but I'm starting to think I'd be better off just using something with better coverage.
However, I have really dry skin and I find that BB cream (I use Dr. Jart) applies better to my skin lately than Makeup Forever HD Foundation. Do you have any recommendations about what to do when your foundation starts looking flakey even with exfoliation?
