My high school advice (text):
things they never teach you in high school (but you learn as soon as you leave)
i'm currently bed-ridden (much to my dismay) because of the stupid wisdom teeth extraction i subjected myself to yesterday. so in true IB fashion, i thought i might impart some fleeting wisdom to any rising seniors (or juniors, or sophomores, or freshman).
1. take really good care of your body. (you only get one!) this means getting as much sleep as possible, eating healthily, exercising, taking really good care of your skin (FYI - uncoated aspirin & water is seriously the best thing for oily, acne-prone skin), & drinking tons of water. when you treat your body well, it serves you well.
2. no one cares what you look like. well, some people do, but those people aren't worth your time. learn to be happy with what you have (and seriously rock what you've got).
3. you're only young once, so live it up. don't make destructive decisions of course, but it's okay to take risks. it's okay to wear crazy red lipstick or do something out of the box to ask someone to prom. if you ask me, it helps the soul grow. plus, those experiences make the best stories. once you're an adult, you have more people to answer to when you do crazy things. corollary to this -- make sure you take a ton of pictures.
4. challenge yourself, or else you won't know what you're made of. you won't know your own potential unless you push for it. future employers really don't care what you are capable of & won't push you the way your teachers do. it's better to leave high school with an idea of what you can do than to just breeze through.
5. read every book that's assigned to you (literally, don't judge a book by it's cover). the only way you can become a fantastic writer is by reading extensively. and in this world, you have to be able to write well to be successful. also, a large vocabulary is impressive.
6. go on college tours as early as possible. it just takes a bit of stress off of your high school experience. i started in sophomore year & i'm so glad i did.
7. only do things you really care about. it might seem appealing to become treasurer of every club, but when you're neck deep in work, you'll end up prioritizing the things you care about. so save yourself the stress & find things you're interested in. invest a lot of time and energy into them.
8. become friends with your teachers. not only are they the ones who are going to be writing your college recs, but they're older and wiser. as you enjoy their company, you won't notice how much your tastes are maturing.
9. try to do one thing, on your own, that you are proud of. whether it's writing a short story in your free time or baking or building a robot, or whatever. do something that is exclusively yours.
10. always ask people what their favorite band is. look up a couple of songs by that band, and find one that you really like. expanding your music tastes seems silly, but i bonded with an interviewer over a favorite song. if you're a reader, the same goes for books.
11. if you're not a reader, become a reader. books sometimes give you a lot more substance than people do.
good luck.

i love you all!
