The key to smoky eyes is of course blendings !
Better not blend at all and doing a very graphic black eye make-up look, than bad blendings !
You don't have to do a feline twist to it and you can do it more rounded. However, on me I don't like round shaped dark smoky as I have round eyes already.
True classic smoky is black and white/beige. I don't like how it looks so I always add a color in the crease to make it more attractive. However, it also depends on the amount of space that you have between your eyes and your brows.
Smoky eyes look good on everybody ! You just have to find the right shape and color placement to make it look good.
