Kyoshi Warriors are quick, well-trained elite female warriors from the show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Their samurai-like outfit and face paint reflect certain familiar aspects of Japanese culture, though their main weapon is the use of a golden fan. You can see influence from geishas, kabuki theatre, traditional Japanese masks and samurai in the way the Kyoshi Warriors move, act and dress. Though skilled in martial arts, their greatest power is the ability to use an opponent's power against them through physical manipulation of force and energy. They are affiliated with the Earth Kingdom, but were ultimately founded by Avatar Kyoshi when she separated Kyoshi Island from the Earth Kingdom to provide a safer haven with less strict rules. The Kyoshi Warriors all paint their faces like this to be uniform and to intimidate.

In this tutorial I show you how to paint on traditional Kyoshi makeup with regular face paint and makeup. I apologize the lines are a bit messy -- I would have really wanted to re-film this tutorial and have everything much neater, but I was in a hurry when filming AND I wanted to release this video before July 1, 2010 (the opening day for AVATAR The Last Airbender the movie). I offer a variety of different ways to draw the red design around the eyes and differently shaped eyebrows. I highly encourage you to draw your own concept sketch before trying this on your own face; If not, at least have reference pictures of Kyoshi Warriors to help you.
NOTES:
*I ran out of white face paint in the process of doing this so I couldn't get the perfected smooth white surface that I would have liked on my face. I also had to rush filming, unfortunately.
*Lining under the eyes with liquid liner or pencil liner is optional. Doing so makes the eyes pop out a lot more giving off an intimidating stare. However, refraining from doing this gives a slimmer, sharper more oriental effect. Take your choose.*
**WARNING** Also, be cautioned that putting red colored dye around your eyes is risky. Red dye can stain more than other colors and some people are allergic to ingredients within red dye. I was perfectly fine, but I caution you to do a test run of putting red face paint around the eyes or anywhere on your skin.
*The foresty footage used in this video was filmed by me for a short horror film I made awhile back ... funny how old footage comes in handy for the most unexpected things!
PLAN AHEAD! * I highly recommend doing a trial or test run with the makeup before you wear it out to whatever event you are attending. That way, you have more practice with drawing the lines and you can experience what holds up, what doesn't and any possible skin irritations that this could cause.
Expect this to take as long as 1-2 hours. It will take much less time than this if you have highly pigmented face paints, because you won't have to wait for layers to dry as many times.

^ (It actually looked a lot better or at least neater the first time, because I had a lot more time, a direct mirror and did not have to rush)
