Ever since Louise published her 'Youtube Culture' video, I've been debating whether or not to share my thoughts on the fangirl/celebrity side of youtube. I've been doing videos for a year and a half now, but have been actively involved in the community for much longer, and in the past few years, youtube has changed a lot. Youtubers are not just people who sit in their bedrooms, filming videos in their free time anymore. Some of them have millions of people watching them, youtube became their job, and they are in a way seen as celebrities, especially by their younger viewers. And while I don't mind seeing people succeed with youtube (in fact, I'm over the moon for them), I feel like the fangirl situation is getting out of hands, and creating the devide between the bigger and smaller youtubers even more apparent. I think it's a little bit too late to change anything about this situation now, as organized meetups and events with thousands of people attending have only increased the way people see youtubers as celebrities, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic! What do you think about youtube celebrity culture and the devide created between 'us' and 'them'? Do you have any suggestions on how we could all interact better and go back to being one big non-creepy happy family? :D
