The "Sweet Approach" sample letter I send to companies:
I have heard that your company is completely cruelty free. As a strict vegetarian I would like to know if your company purchases any ingredients from suppliers that test on animals? I am aware that even if your company doesn't test, some of your shades/colors/products may contain carmine and other animal bi-products such as lanolin. Do you have a vegan list?
Thanks so much for your time, I appreciate your efforts on having a cruelty free company. Hope to hear from you.
Sincerely, Grace
Thanks to Inspiredmom824 for providing this letter for us. Here is a letter from Benefit, this letter was written to make it seem like they don't test, when in fact THEY DO!

Hi Jennifer,

Our main mission and our duty is to guarantee safe and high quality products for our consumers. Concerned to ensure consumer confidence in its products, LVMH group has always been committed to supplying products of consistently impeccable quality.
The products developed therefore comply with the severest laws in the world, while also meeting our very strict internal criteria for development, quality constraints, traceability and product safety. These requirements guarantee the product's safety for the consumer.
Since 1989, The Perfume & Cosmetics companies of the LVMH Group have no longer carried out animal testing for the products they market, hence well before the official ban in the European Union which dates back to 2004.
Regarding the commercialization of our products in China, before selling cosmetics products in China, we need to register the product and to get the approval from the authorities.
Thank you for choosing Benefit Cosmetics and have a beautiful day.
