See the process I used to dye my dark brown hair to red without using bleach! I used L'Oreal's Hi Color permanent colors in red and magenta to achieve this look, along with a 30 volume developer. I let the dye saturate my hair for 30 minutes - I forgot to mention this in the video! Everything I used in the video was purchased at Sally Beauty Supply and cost around $30 total. "Since 30 Volume Developer contains hydrogen peroxide, isn't that bleaching?"
It's my understanding (though I'm not a professional) that using 30 volume developer on your hair will lighten it 3 levels, unlike bleach which will completely strip your hair of all color. So while technically I did bleach my hair since the developer contains hydrogen peroxide, I didn't do much damage to the hair shaft.
