Since I never know what to get anyone for Christmas I thought I'd try a DIY this year and this is what I came up with. Its super easy to make and extremely affordable. I'm going to end up making ten of them and they each are going to cost me around 1.80 per jar ( including jar, ribbon, candy cane and all ingredients! I tried to pick up most ingredients at Walmart and the "great value" brand to cut down on cost, which I think worked well).
Recipe: (one jar, if you want to do multiple just times each ingredient by the number of jars you want to make)
2 cups granulated sugar
1/3 cup light olive oil
1/8 cup melted coconut oil
1/4 tsp peppermint extract
food coloring
festive ribbon
candy canes
mason jars
Directions:
Pour the granulated sugar, light olive oil, and peppermint extract in a large bowl. Measure out your coconut oil and microwave it for about 8 seconds to turn it into an oil (it comes in a jar as almost a solid). Pour that into the large bowl and mix all together. If it seems still too dry then add a bit more olive oil (but don't go off looks, actually feel the mixture and see if its too dry because it might look dry but is actually oily.)
Divide half of the mixture onto a plate or bowl you don't mind using food coloring on and mix in red food coloring until it is the desired redness you like. Now take turns packing the white sugar mixture and the red in the mason jar to give a nice candy cane look to it. Make sure it is packed tightly to avoid the colors from running together. Now screw your lid on, wrap the ribbon around it securing the candy cane to the lid and you are all done!
