Since the new Fenty Beauty line came out, a new word is on every beauty bloggers lips: Dry Down. So what is it and what's the difference between Oxidation and Dry Down? I'm going to tell you!
What is Oxidizing?
Let's start with an oldie but goodie. What does oxidation mean? Scientifically, oxidation is when a molecule, atom, or ion loses electrons. So for something to oxidize the oxidation state has to rise. To give an example that actually makes sense, think of an apple turning brown or a pipe rusting. Some things oxidize easier than others depending on the circumstances. Speaking of circumstances, one thing that has to happen when something rusts is not only oxidation, but also reduction. Basically oxidation causes a loss of electrons, reduction causes a gain in electrons. A redox reaction is what causes rust. Both oxidation and reduction have to happen at the same time.
What does this have to do with makeup?
Alot actually. Making cosmetics products is chemistry.
