Monotasking is one of the MOST powerful productivity tools out there. Why is it better than multitasking?
Studies have shown that prolonged periods of multitasking leads to a decrease in productivity (due to becoming more distracted and chaotic) and an increase in stress levels. In fact, these increased stress hormones lead to LONG TERM health problems as diverse as anxiety, insomnia, heart disease and digestive disruption, memory impairment and trouble concentrating. We all know stress is bad for us... but how do we escape from the cycle of "too much to do, all the time"?
The ANSWER is MONTOASKING.
Slow down and listen to your body. Concentrate on the task at hand, be present with your work. Start to encourage positive neural patterns - in other words, stop stressing out your nervous system.
You don't need to bite off more than you can chew in order to get things done. That's just counter-productive, and you'll end up overwhelmed and stressed out. Trust me, I've been there.
Give monotasking a try, you'll be surprised how calm and collected you start to feel. BONUS: you will actually get more done. Win-win!
