9-18-17 Devotional Diva - Are You Mindful of Your Emotions?
Even though I have changed this year, I still have issues with old habits trying to pop back up. Like feeling like a mistake are the end or the world.
When I was growing up, even the slightest mistake meant a long lecture on how if I were my parent’s employee, I would have been fired from the family by now. I can remember this even as young as 7 years old. If the coffee was too hot, too cold, or spilled over the edge on to the saucer while I was carrying it to my dad, it meant a demoralizing lecture on what I did wrong then and usually brought up additional things I did wrong in the past as well, just in case I forgot. These lectures could last 5 mins or 2 hours depending on my dad’s mood. Now that I am older, I realize that my dad did was part of his mental illness, but it had a lasting effect.

Psalm 139:23 (NIV)
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Even now at work, hearing my supervisor say that it took me longer than it should have to complete a task was devastating internally. I could hear my dad’s voice in my head lecturing me on how terrible I was and I felt so low I wanted crawl in the corner and cry. I had to take a minute to breathe and talk myself down off the mental ledge.
I breathed and thanked God for being with me. That I am a wonderful child of God and I reminded myself that it was only the 2nd time I did this task. I know I will get faster as I get more familiar with the process.

Colossians 3:2 (NIV)
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. ----------------------------------------------------------------
Later, I asked my supervisor for any tips on how to be more efficient. Oddly enough, my supervisor didn’t have any tips for me, because they hadn’t done that task in so long. They weren’t upset, they were making a general observation based on how long it usually took to complete the task. I was beating myself up for being too slow for no reason.
It might sound weird, but I believe that this is the way the devil gets in our head to make us feel less than. Using negative feelings to rob me of my joy and keep me in a state of fear and anxiety.
Saying a little pray and being thankful helped me over the mental hurdle that would normally have ruined my whole day. Instead I released it to God and was able to continue on with a productive and happy day.

Philippians 4:7New International Version (NIV)
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
