Today I want to tell you about a tool we use to help us sock away mad money to help us enrich our lives: The Experience Jar. As Elder millennials, my husband and I find ourselves focusing on paying off debt and putting money into savings for the future, however we also want to make sure we aren't depriving ourselves of life's little joys along the way; We tried that, it didn't work. So several months ago we started something called "The Experience Jar". Ours is a a piggy bank but it could be as simple a mason jar, or something more decorative, but I do think it's important that you use a physical jar, and don't save this money digitally. I personally have found that having a physical connection to the savings makes me less likely to spend it on something else.
We add money to our jar when we can: Change from our wallets, unexpected things like birthday money, when we use coupons, make meals stretch, or otherwise find creative ways to save money, we put those savings in the Experience Jar.
So what do we use this money for? Immaterial Experiences. This money is to be spent guilt-free for big and small ticket joys in life that are not material in nature. Concert, Theater and Movie Tickets, Massages, Small-Budget Travel, Coffee with a friend, Dinner at a sit-down Restaurant, Pool or Gym fees. Things that make our lives rich and pleasurable that are not really "things". We've found that by having these little pleasures, we don't feel like we're missing out, and in the case of things like concert tickets, the wait for the show increases the pleasure. The Experience Jar is a tool that almost anyone can use to make sure they live the good life in the present.
