Hey guys!
Welcome to what I hope will be a new series on this channel, all about skin conditions and how to treat them successfully. Today it's all about hormonal acne: what causes it, and what you can do to treat it!

Here's a bit more information about this type of acne:
So what causes such acne to happen anyway?
- As the name suggests, it usually has a lot to do with your hormones, specifically the sex hormones such as progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone. Insulin is another hormone that can cause this type of acne to flare up. These hormones can cause a range of fluctuations, like increased oil production and excess hair.
- Another cause can be stress, and especially if you’re an adult, you probably will be facing a range of stressful situations! You’re working, you’re studying at uni, you’re probably exploring relationships and maybe even starting a family.
- Other causes include some birth control options, insulin resistance, obesity and other medical conditions such as PCOS.
How can you know for sure if you’ve got it?
- I think it’s important to know for certain that you have this kind of acne, instead of speculating and running around in circles trying to fix it. And the best thing you can do is head on down to your friendly doctors and get checked out. You can get a blood test done to check your hormone levels, and if you’re concerned you may have a more significant issue like PCOS, then they can do ultrasounds and other tests for you too. I personally feel it’s better to be assessed by a medical practitioner in this way instead of trusting Dr Google, or else you may go years trying and testing all kinds of products and tools and gadgets, spending ridiculous amounts of money in the process, all of which will get you no-where.
What are some treatment options?
- A simple skincare routine is actually very effective. Use simple, straight-forward products made for sensitive, oily-prone skin. A face wash, toner, gentle water-based moisturiser and acne cream may be all you need to get your hormonal acne under control.
- I think it’s also incredibly important to assess your lifestyle and decide if there are any factors that could be causing you stress. Of course, cutting out stress would be ideal, but this isn’t always possible, especially if you’ve got kids going through their terrible two’s! So be realistic, and do what you can. Maybe do some calm breathing or meditation, focus on things that make you happy, and tell people you need to de-stress!
- Medically, there are options, and your doctor should talk you through these. There are medications you can take for things such as insulin resistance and obesity. You could also consider taking the pill, or changing your oral contraceptive to a different pill that may be more effective. You can also have your doctor prescribe you antibiotics and topical creams to use that will quickly but possibly only temporarily reduce the acne. Your doctor may also refer you on to a dermatologist who can prescribe you medication such as Accutane.
Please let me know what you think about all this in the comments below! Even stuff like the editing - does it suck? How can I make this series better?
See you guys later in the week!
