Expressing the Korean feeling of Han 한 with makeup.

hello everyone ʕ˙ᴥ˙ʔ as a shironuri artist, i've wanted to cover aspects of my own culture for a long time but didn't know what i should do. i wanted to express different aspects of korean culture that aren't really talked about.

after some thought, i decided to cover the korean feeling of han. han 한 is a complex feeling that doesn't have an equivalent word in english. so i thought i would try to express this difficult emotion with makeup combined with the shironuri style i've been wearing for over a year now.

han is an emotion that is caused by a long lasting oppression that cannot be overcome. it causes a sort of sadness, grief, and a sort of pain that crying won't absolve; it's a very deep, lifelong pain. at the same time, it is something you bitterly accept but hope someday than the oppression will be overcome.

moreover, it is a feeling caused by the history of korea. if you have not gone through oppression yourself, chances are your parents or grandparents did. such as being brutally colonized in the early 1900s, or the aftermath of the korean war. it can be oppression by your own government. or not being able to be accepted into korean society because you are not pure blood, instead you are multiracial (which describes me).

and even then i'm not explaining this feeling the best i can, but i hope you can get a jist of what it is.

i've made this makeup look knowing that it will not be popular; frankly i don't care. if it does i will be surprised. but expressing certain parts of my culture and life through shironuri (and more generally, makeup) has always been a goal of mine. i encourage everyone to reconsider how they view makeup and try expressing themselves in creative forms as well. :)

for this makeup i wanted to create something subtle but looked sad and had very soft colors. i spent 3 days trying to perfect it. i found that blending more intense colors over a taupe eyeshadow base dulled them down and gave a softer feel. i decided to emphasize my features instead of hiding them, hence the shading around my nose.

i also focused on making the white very prominent since personally for me i always associate it with funerals.
