Hello and welcome back to my Halloween 2015 series (。◕‿◕。) This video is actually a DIY tutorial on how to make a simple skull mask for Halloween. Further instructions, items you'll need, and safety/warning tips will be listed below.
`*•.¸♥♫ ITEMS REQUIRED ♫ ♥¸.•*´
→ Face cast (if you don't have one, use a blank plastic mask from the craft store)
→ Glue gun
→ A lot of glue sticks
→ Liquid latex
→ Cotton balls
→ Small sponges
→ A variety of cheap brushes
→ White acrylic paint
→ Black acrylic paint
→ Elastic
→ Mod Podge
`*•.¸♥♫ INSTRUCTIONS ♫ ♥¸.•*´
1. If you own a face cast, apply vaseline on it. This will make it easier to take off the dried glue later on.
2. Draw the design of your skull mask on the face cast. It's best to reference a photo of a skull while doing this.
3. Fill in the entire design with hot glue and make it thick. This will be the base of the skull, and the thicker it is, the sturdier the mask.
4. After it is completely dry, remove with fingers or other supplies (such as very dull scissors). Please do not use anything sharp while doing this.
5. Taking liquid latex and cotton, layer thick pieces of latex onto the mask, painting liquid latex on top. I am using cheap brushes to do this so it has more of a textured effect. Be warned that liquid latex ruins brushes, so don't use any expensive brushes for this.
6. Allow it to dry. You can use either a hair dryer or allow it to air dry on its own.
7. Once it is fully dry, take away any stickiness with a powder.
8. Paint the mask with white acrylic paint.
9. After it is fully coated, mix white and black acrylic paint together to get a light gray color. Stipple this around the holes, protrusions, and edges of the mask to make it look more 3-D.
10. Stipple black acrylic paint just around the edges and holes of the mask to make it stand out even more.
11. If desired, paint the back of the mask. I did this because I thought the hot glue itself was an ugly color.
12. After the paint is dry, attach elastic to the back of the mask. Measure your head first with the elastic, then hot glue it to the sides of the back of the skull mask.
13. To seal the acrylic paint, which will enhance its longevity (and frankly, I don't want acrylic paint touching my skin), apply a sealer on top. For this I used Mod Podge, but this isn't ideal...it works, though.
14. After it is dry, you are finished! I recommend painting your face black so the skull mask really stands out.
♫ ♥¸.•*´ PRECAUTIONS/WARNINGS ♫ ♥¸.•*´
→ Be very careful around hot glue, regardless of what you're doing. Hot glue is...well, extremely hot and if you get it on your skin it can hurt a lot and cause blistering.
→ Make sure the area you are working in is well-ventilated and covered with newspaper. The items you are working with can release fumes when hot which you don't want to breathe in.
→ Please make sure to check if you are allergic to latex before doing this tutorial.
→ While the top coat of Mod Podge helps protect the acrylic paint underneath, this does not mean it is waterproof. Obviously don't dive into a pool with this on.
→ If you want your own face cast, it's best to have one made by a special FX makeup artist. Think twice before following a face cast tutorial on Youtube. Most of these do not take into account necessary safety precautions and will not be as detailed...speaking from personal experience.
Hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Don't forget to give it a thumbs up if you did :)
