ALAN Z MTV BIO
Having lived in an overpopulated city in China, European sophistication in London, a torrid island in Singapore, a predominantly black neighborhood in Maryland, and a lily-white suburb in Seattle, Alan Z was oblivious to the concept of culture shock from the jump. His unique life experiences that spanned across three different continents helped foster his creativity and realize himself as an individual rather than part of a generalized group. During his time in Takoma Park, Maryland, he attended school with mostly black and Latino students and his father worked at the historically-black institution Howard University. He began writing short stories and poetry at a young age of seven, and that love for writing developed into a strong passion for music when he and his family moved from Maryland to Seattle.
He began his musical journey as a rap artist at 12, working with different rap groups and free-styling in school and local ciphers. By the time he turned 15, he began focusing on singing, but only on the side. At first he was reluctant to pursue it fully due to his love for Hip-hop, especially when he was being offered recording contracts as a rapper from local Seattle record labels. However, he soon realized singing was his true calling when he began noticing the warm reception he received, especially from females.
When he was 17, he decided to move down to Atlanta, the Mecca of urban music. It was in the South where he really began seeing opportunities presenting themselves and where he began amassing support for his singing accolades. Influenced by Eminem, 2Pac, Michael Jackson, Rakim, Big Pun, Lauryn Hill, Usher, Trey Songz, Chris Brown, R. Kelly, The Weekend, Tonedeff, and Chino XL among many others, Alan Z strives to be a trailblazer for Asian-Americans in the entertainment industry. His message is simple: God is love and the concept of race should not matter in what kind of life you want to lead and what dreams you wish to pursue.
