I've seen that a lot of people in the Indian culture use Turmeric for cosmetic beauty purposes. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used it in a home facial mask or anything, and can comment on how to use it and what their experience was. I'm really interested in trying it, but I'm afraid that it will either stain my face or irritate it. Anyone use it before?? Thanks in advance...

Turmeric can be allergic for some. It irritated my skin and made me break out. It also makes skin photosensitive. So before using it make sure to do a patch test.

It is an irritant, so yes it will irritate you and it falls right next to cinammon.
Especially if you have acne-prone skin, as you don't want to make it worse. Turmeric is a spice, although it may have beneficial properties remember there is a safe way to achieve these properties without harming the skin.
Remember, when your skin is irritated. It does not need to be visible, red, or feel like anything.
The effects still happen... your skin's repair process becomes damaged, collagen breaks down, and the skin's surface is weakened, kind of like putting lemon/lime on your face. Irritation can even trigger nerve endings in your pores. What can happen as that this trigger ends up activating hormones. With that, an increase of oil production may occur and can result in enlarged pores.

Turmeric's active ingredient is curcumin...curcumin does have antiseptic properties as well as anti inflammatory properties. It works for some...when I was in my teens I had horrible acne, my mom used to buy turmeric roots and purée it and apply to my face. It made my acne worse because it was so drying! Now, my skin has changed with age and I don't get pimples. I've started using a DIY mask of puréed turmeric root, yogurt, honey, and rice flour. It works great to tighten my pores, moisturizer my skin, exfoliate, and it gives me a glow! So...just assess your skin and if it is on the dry side I don't suggest using turmeric...but if not... Do a patch test, wait overnight and see if there is a chance it might break you out. If it doesn't... Go for it!

Thanks for the advice. I will try it out on a small patch. I'm really wanting to try it to see if it really does help with uneven skin tone though. If anyone has an at home remedy for skin brightening I would love to hear it :)

Angel...the above DIY is a brightening mask I use. some people add a few drops of lemon but I feel it's not necessary. let me know if you try it out! I feel that turmeric works better to even out indian skin just because we have the yellow undertone...I know another DIY mask for brightening that was featured in an editorial in beautylish using ripe papaya and another using strawberries that might be better if you are worried about staining from the turmeric.

I use a little tumeric, honey and milk and make a paste. I leave it in my skin for no more than 15 min at night. when I wash it off, skin may look little yellow but when I wake up it glows and gives me a radiant look. :) In hindu wedding there is a day dedicated to put tumeric and garm flour mix all over bride's body to give her a flawless look right before the wedding.
