A chignon is just a bun! You could spice it up making a braid and then making a bun with it, low on the nape with soft messy tendrils in the front. Sorry I can't load any pics right now.

What does your neckline of your dress look like? If someone has a one shoulder dress, I normally do something on the opposite side on their hair to balance it out. If you have a v neck, there's lots of options as well as strapless. I can think of ideas a lot better if I know what the dress looks like :]
