I'm a professional MUA and went to school for it. I know I personally don't follow the solid black rule but I always wear black slacks and a professional looking shirt, usually a darker color. The general reason for this is because dark color and black hide any makeup that you may spill on yourself better than other colors. Nothing looks more unprofessional than tan pants with a black eyeliner stain or split foundation on a white shirt

I always see the ladies at sephora in all black and red pumps. I find it very near and professional looking, and as Rachel said it's easier to hide makeup spills when wearing black.

It's a standard that has been set as a dress code for a lot of companies so I could imagine why most of the time it's an all black attire.
MAC for instance, you are to wear all black. They have a fairly strict dress code ( If you wear make up, it needs to be MAC. If you wear lipstick, it has to have 3 products involved and all MAC. Manicured hands and must be with MAC polish and toes must be manicured with MAC polish as well. ) However, most people associate someone wearing all black as a make up artist. ( It's happened to me several times wearing make up and all black clothing. ) I mean if I was shopping for make up and someone who worked at the counter was wearing colors instead of black I probably wouldn't even approach them and assume they are a consumer.

I don't actually mind having to wear all black I notice that even when I'm not going to work I will wear jeans and a black shirt or something. Sometimes I do get bored and wish I could spice it up a little but its nice to be able to wear any color eye or lip look and not have it clash with your outfit.

Sephora employees will never have on anything but the all black uniform or the black dress w a red stripe, otherwise they are not sephora employees they are brand support for a specific retail company.

as long as you dress tasteful your outfit shouldnt matter, but it is nice when you wear all one color (like black) so that the focus is all on the client :)
