Hi Jolene! I'm an aspiring MUA and a mom too. I'll be 21 in 8 days but I got married when I was 18 and had my daughter when I was 19. I completely understand and know that feeling of being underestimated and judged. That being said, finacially, high end makeup is just going to have to wait. Right now, I'm in an online makeup academy that is so convenient for moms,(Thank God for tax return) and I know that I want to have a range from drugstore to high end. I've been doing my research on the most affordable way to build your makeup kit and have learned that it's easiest to buy palettes. Amazon has some amazing palettes that won't break your bank and that work really well. Just remember that the way you're feeling, is the same way many young Girls are feeling. Many can't afford high end so with that, I've decided to do drugstore makeup also to show them that it works just as well. I used to feel like aww man I can't afford all the stuff normal MUAs have in their kit but all it takes is a little research to know how to build your kit with quality but also be affordable. I hope I helped you. It's tough, but you got this! Don't feel too down on yourself!

Don't worry Jolene, a lot of people have a rough time starting out in any career field. Just keep going! Don't ever let anyone else stop you.
As for the high end thing, I feel ya lol. I can only buy drugstore. Occasionally I'll splurge on a Lush skincare product.
But I think if you're good at what you do, the drugstore/high end thing won't matter too much in the end:)

Hey Jolene, don't feel bad, you're doing what you love as a job. As for building a better kit, if you can prove your an MUA most highend and even some drugstore, will offer you half off their products. I also would recommend an online academy for makeup, it could improve your skin greaty. Before you know it, clients will be rolling in.

It's like hearing myself 4 years ago. I was 18 an aspiring make up artist with a baby.
my suggestions are to try out bridal make up. advertise of bridal websites and on any free sites you can. there's no need to say your age and circumstances in the advert and by the time you turn up at there home they'll choose you because of he talent not your age. as for not having high end make-up. I don't think many MUA's do have at the beginning. I certainly didn't and even now I have a good mixture. I choose products on how good they are not on the brand name! offer cheap bridal make up to build up a portfolio. x it worked wonders for me.
