Your hair type doesn't matter for the build up, it's the product itself. I've got kinky hair that when I style at least 3-5 things are going in it and I don't get product buildup (and I use some thick stuff). But when I use products by a brand called Cantu I ALWAYS have buildup, my hair just doesn't like it.
Anyway, you may need to switch to a different type of product.

You may want to try using a clarifying shampoo now and then.
