Honestly,
I use my bronzer to contour. I have a matte bronzer from bare minerals and it actually works really well... My thinking is that you could use matte brown eyeshadow a... Just make sure whatever you use doesn't have any shimmer to it! Or better yet you could invest in a contour and highlight stick. Those are out of my personal price range so I don't use them but it's an option

I seriously recommend Mac's Omega eyeshadow or Urban Decay's single eyeshadow in Naked, they imitate a shadow on your face with making you look too gray, they are seriously amazing.

Using an eyeshadow is fine but try using a gray shadow. I've used a more grey toned brown but when it's blended and such it has a red tone to it especially in pictures. I use a medium grey and put it on lightly and it looks great. Seems odd but it works well. I'm sure a grey toned brown can work for other skin tones though :)
