I'd say make sure your scalp is always clean. Prevent buildup by washing maybe one week and deep conditioning often.
LOC method when moisturizing your hair: liquid, oil, cream and in that order. Stay away from the flatiron unless it's like 1-2 times a year! Otherwise YouTube can help with a lot.
