I love Revlon color stay, but if you really just want to know more about foundation, I'd go to a local Sephora or Ulta to learn more. they can even match you to tell you what undertones you have and suggest foundations. Or read blogs online, there's ton that can help you out.

Honestly I would just save the trouble with messing with drugstore and go for higher end or at least go get color matched at Mac and then it can help you pick out most other shades in different brands. Like others mentioned, you need to figure out your undertones, skin type (super important! You need to know if you are dry, oily, combo, sensitive) etc. Also, a lot of girls believe that you need to 'see the makeup' on your skin when really you want the color that disappears when you are color matching. I find that the neck/jawline is the best place to decide what color is best for you, a lot of girls look at their arm/hand and thats not always the best because my arms are darker than my face. Remember to choose the right color for your skin and not the color you "think" it is (my friend does this because she thinks she is tanner, but shes not). When you start wearing foundation I DO NOT care how tired you are but wash that makeup OFF at the end of the day, trust me it only takes a couple of minutes, because you want a clean slate to work with so you aren't have to cover as much with the makeup. You will also need a setting powder to help make the foundation last and help control oily. Read reviews! I can't say that enough because I used to waste money on makeup that wasn't right for my skin type (check out makeupalley, they have the best reviews). As far as brands go, it really just depends what your skin tone and type is. But here is a list of my favorites.
L'Oreal
Flower (walmart only)
Too Faced (wrong color for me though)
Urban Decay
Nars
Tarte
Clinique (loveeeeee this stuff eand the prices are reasonable for high end)
Makeup Forever
And Sephora's brands.
Primers and Moisturizers are also your friends! Goes back to the clean slate for makeup, before applying foundation, you need to wash face, I tone after (you don't have to but I always do), moisturize (I use CeraVe),
prime (I love Benefit, Rimmel, Maybelline, Nyx,
or L'Oreal), and then apply the foundation
