Is it possible to dye natural black hair without bleaching it? I want to get subtle highlights for my hair but I need advice on shades that will suit my tanned skin and some recommendations for a semi permanent hair dye.
Have anyone used l'oreal casting creme gloss? Does it show up on dark hair?

To get highlights in black hair bleaching is the only option, colour won't take to your hair if it isn't lightened.

I don't want to go super light, just 1-2 shades lighter...I have read that dyes like L'Oreal's Excellence HiColor work on really dark hair without having to bleach it...

I'll look into it and I'll see If I can help you out :) I trust Loreal dyes though so it's probably correct! Have you thought about the shwartzkopft l+ dyes? :)

Loreal hicolor works excellent on naturally dark hair! I've used it about 3-4 times to dye my hair red from a darker color and I've gotten nothing but good results. Because you want a more subtle look I'd buy the lowest volume developer (20 volume) and the color of your choosing which would be a brown. the higher the developer the stronger and more vibrant of a color youll get and by vibrant I mean its not so subtle. :) I hope I helped.

I'm not so sure how far your black hair will lift, I used the L'Or?al Hicolor on my mother's naturally black hair and let it sit for quite a long while and it didn't take. If your going to bleach (which it sounds like you might have to) just get a very low volume developer, and just let it develope slowly, let it sit for like 2-3 hours. I know it sounds like a very long time but trust me it's better for your hair than a high volume developer that sits on your hair for a short period of time. My suggestion is to go online and do your research, check out Guy Tangs videos on YouTube, he's like the king of the ombre and is an expert on bleaching. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Not true I have black hair and reds and brown usually show up just fine and just as vibrant in color without bleach - you only need bleach if you are going blonde or a crazy color like hot pink or light blue - any of the darker colors - reds n browns will show up just fine without bleaching but it may take more time than someone with brown or blonde hair so yes let it sit until you can see the color change while it's wet before you wash it out.

If your hair is virgin (never been died at all) then you can use a high level developer to lighten your hair with color. If I were you, I'd go to a salon to get it done. They will know the right stuff to use, just make sure to specify that you have Virginia hair (if that's the case) and don't want to use bleach at all.
It might cost your a little bit more the. The DIY solution, but you can cut out a lot of headaches and tears.
