Lighter is to highlight, darker is to contour.

Yes, you can contour with foundation two shades darker. Lighter color is to highlight and brighten up your face applying it on the center of your forhead, bridge of the nose under eyes, cupids bow and chin. Darker color is to contour applying on your forehead (if you want to make it appear smaller),sides of the nose, temples, cheekbones and jaw line.
