Ahhhh I know how you feel! I get emotionally attached to my acrylics! Whenever I take them off I go through withdrawal!
Rockin the natural nails right now though!

I never wear fake nails but my natural nails are quite long, but this week I broke three of them on one hand so I cut all my nails short. Its heart-breaking.

Thanks! Um.. I'm not sure, I think the main thing is staying on top of trimming because I find that once they start to chip (the nail not the polish) there's no saving them. I rarely wear nail polish, but if I do I do a base coat and I take it off with a nourishing (so it says anyway) nail polish remover. I think a big thing is the trimming though :)

Woohoo for natural nails! I too was an acrylic nail junkie. I used to do them myself just like you. I was OBSESSED with glitter french tips.
I got a job at Domino's and could no longer wear them. I can't even have nail polish at all. My heart was broken. My natural nails were super weak, brittle and paper thin. That was nearly 2 years ago.
Recently I've been using a product called OPI Nail Envy and it's really helped my nails grow out. I bought the matte version so I could get away with it at work. It's not 100% matte, but the shine isn't super obvious or unnatural looking. It's really helped strengthen my nails and they are growing a lot quicker than usual.
I also recommend gel nails. I have them on right now- I just get clear so they aren't super obvious to my boss. I think of gel nails as like a coat of armour on your nails to protect them from breaking.
