I prefer Sephora. I only really go to Ulta if there's not a Sephora around or for Real Techniques or Nyx products. I much prefer Sephora's rewards program and their samples. Ulta's samples, at least online, are not customizable. The main reason I don't go there is because I have had some of the worst customer service ever there. I wouldn't even call it customer service though, I was basically ignored even when checking out. It put a really bad taste in my mouth. I've since had a better experience but it makes me always cautious when I go to one. I have never, ever had that happen at a Sephora so I prefer to spend my time and money there.

I'm half and half! I go to Ulta more because I feel like I can browse better. Sephora is always too crowded but nice to visit if I need something matched.

I like both. I have an Ulta here in town. Though if there were a Sephora here, I'd go there more, since their customer service is great and I love that they give samples for literally everything - Ulta doesn't. I also prefer Sephora's rewards program over Ulta's. The only reason I go into Ulta nowadays are to use coupons and buy NYX products.

I prefer Ulta because I feel like they have a wider variety. They don't only have high end stuff either; they provide drug store products too. I also like that they have the salon in Ulta. I like both but I prefer Ulta.

Definitely ulta...I agree with sarah c. I like the customer service there more...even though it seems that most don't feel that way...for some reason at sephora the employees I've dealt with are always rude. at ulta they seem more attentive to their customers.

In my current city, I prefer Ulta! I only have a Sephora in JCP and it will suffice when I need something more popular, but I actually do much more shopping at Sephora online because of this, and I hate it... I like instant gratification when it comes to makeup! So I'm at Ulta on a regular basis instead.
I always have interesting/unique/weird hair and clothing, so many sales people come up to me asking questions or discussing beauty/hair products I use; most "normal" people tend to get ignored, especially if they aren't wearing makeup, nice clothes, or their hair isn't done (at Sephora) =( BUT I do see the Ulta staff taking care of EVERYONE regardless of their looks, so I respect that much more. The superior attitude a lot of Sephora employees give off to their customers really turns me off, even if they do treat me well, so its unfortunate.
I love both rewards programs and enjoy both sample selections &bonuses (in stores), but must agree that online sample selection at Sephora is superior. Online shopping in general is MUCH better at Sephora and almost always makes me groan in annoyance if I have to do so at Ulta.com.
Ulta's layout is far superior. There is much more space, I find every single Sephora to be cramped and unpleasant-even the large ones back at home (in NYC). My shopping experience is much more pleasant in the Ulta store layouts and I feel like I can take my time and browse as I please, which is really important to me.
The product variety at each store has certain advantages, so I'm not upset shopping at either. NYX and other drugstore brands are GREAT to see at Ulta, but certain exclusive brands like OCC and Kat Von D are are plus at Sephora.
Love them both, but Ulta has much mroe to offer in my city, so I ultimately favor it because of that.

Since a new ULTA opened up by my house and I've gotten to know the management staff its kind of a toss up for me. When I needed to take a few young ladies from the domestic violence shelter to shop before the store opened for the public due to security reasons they didnt pause at all and made it possible for me. Sephora on the other hand...they were too scared to ask corporate for permission. Sephora carries more of my favorite lines but what my local ULTA did for me...they definitely racked up major customer service points with me.
