So I've had acne scars for the longest and next week I'll finally be seeing a dermatologist. But in my head I'm thinking they'll prescribe me something and my face will finally be clear. But now I'm just not sure if thats really how its going to work or if it won't work at all.. I was wondering what experiences have you girls had with dermatologists?

These type of things are trial and error! they'll surely help you. if it doesn't work, it's not their fault, they'll help you until you do find something that works for you.

When I first went I got a very insignificant topical treatment for my chest acne and face, and some cream for my dry spots (mostly on my eyebrows- weird I know) and then specialized dandruff shampoo but that doesn't matter lol. Anyways, it didn't do much. I was on it for a couple of weeks and my appointments were spaced out for every 3 weeks until the derm sees improvement. So she bumped me up to taking an oral medication and my face cream was now has a higher percentage of acne-fighting properties. I had to take the pill every night and to be honest, I suck at schedule. I forgot a lot and of course I couldn't see the true difference because of that. That's what my doctor told me so I tried really hard to remember and I did see actually very fast results. My face got a little dry, that's normal.
After I have stopped taking the pills (7 weeks now) I only have the occasional small whitehead- mostly hormonal causes. I'm very happy I went because I spent a lot of money on store bought stuff and when they didn't work I got really depressed which made it worse. So my lesson out of this rambling is:
- it gets worse before it gets better
- you need time to see a change
-the chances of improvement are higher than store bought stuff
-stay on track. Help the dermatologist do their job.

Vanessa I promise you, you're making the best decision for your skin!
I've been going for around 6 years now. And I will admit that my skin is still NOT perfect. But where could it be right now? 100 times worse.
My first advice is to not get discouraged. Many people expect results over night, which is unrealistic. You HAVE to stick to you regimen. You can't use it twice and say, "It doesn't work."
And next, if you truly are religiously using a product for an extended period of time and it's NOT working, go back to the Derm. They'll bump you up to the next strongest product. It's what they call "climbing a ladder" until you reach a product that delivers results.
Best of luck! 💋

My experience was great. I use to has moderate to severe acne throughout middle school and I was bullied for it other things a factor but mostly my acne. My freshman year I went to the dermatologist and it helped my acne. I got prescribed a cream acne wash called panoxyl and a trention cream they gave me for my acne. They gave me cerave moisturizers and they helped as well. My skin has never been clearer, and I never felt better. I tried almost skin care products and some home remedies. They didn't help me much. Keep in mind you have to give the treatments some time to work as well. I really love my dermatologist. Though I call bullshit that the tretion cream evens out my skin tone but it did help only a little bit. I think I spelled the tretion cream wrong lol.

Also I did had a good diet, drink more water, and got more sleep. I didn't have much problem with stress though. Plus sodas did break me out so I had lay off those.

I have never had any luck with dermatologists. I've gone almost completely natural with my skincare routine. No medications. And my skin has looked better than it ever has.
