All I know is to bleach it first!

There's no easy way to get it done, it also depends on the severity of the red you want. I've managed to do it myself using packet dyes, but it never hurts to consult your hairdresser first :)

hi Brittany, what you will have to do is bleach bath it. depending on what color history you have eg, home color or salon color, home color being harder to get out. but no stress you won't have to lighten too much if you want a deep red because the underlying pigment of a dark brown (4 level) is in fact red. where as if you want a dark blonde (6 level) you may struggle a little because its so light. my advise is that you need to do it gradually otherwise you will find your hair will defiantly be dry but there's a chance it will become so dry it can actually snap. my suggestion to you would be to get some good shampoo and conditioner/masque to help with some protein eg redken extreme range hope this helps

Do a color remover before you resort to bleach please... It's much less damaging

Loreal makes a color that will work over dark hair, I think it's called hicolor? not sure, but they sell it at Sally's

Do a bleach cocktail. It's what we use in salons. Just mix shampoo, bleach and conditioner. Then apply it to wet hair and lather. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Should lighten it enough to then put a red on it.

Or try rusks elimin8 colour remover first. But if your natural hair colour is quite dark it's probably best to do a cocktail.

I've thought about using a colour remover and actually bought the Rusk remover but bottled out of using it cos I was worried after reading some reviews of colour remover people tended to be of the thought that when they coloured after using a remover their hair drank up colour and ended up with much darker results Than the packaging suggested which would defeat the whole point of using the colour remover in the first place! anyone have some thoughts on that and how to reduce the risk of it happening? thanks

Just from my personal experience, I'd suggest going to a salon for corrective color if its in your budget. It's what I SHOULD have done back then lol. But it seems there are some ladies here that are stylists and know what they're doing. So I'm sure their advice is good. I'm just speaking on personal experience. I knew nothing of the bleach cocktail that was mentioned here until now, so maybe if I'd known back then my experience would have been better! lol. Good luck with whatever you choose to do though :)

Ya you learn lots of stuff working in salons. I've always liked doing my own hair. If you know what your doing it shouldn't be an issue.
I know I hate going to the salon now any forking out $300 to do what I could have done at home.

Yikes thats a mission. Im personally dyed my hair jet black and tried going to brown again but i ended up dying it superblack again from mu picture. My hair had to be bleach and it turned orange then i dyed it brown over but it turn to a dark red. I suggest to not touch it and go to a hair salon asap! Trust me been there. Done that
