Hey Kitty, do you mind if I use this idea for my blog? I don't want to use the idea without your permission :)

Cydney E.

I love this idea kitty! I will definitely contribute tomorrow. but I'm wondering, what's wrong with getting advice from YouTube? :( lol.

The thing about Youtube, Cydney, is that often those girls have no professional training and suggest things that are either harmful or extremely inaccurate (think smokey eyes that aren't actually smokey eyes, "vampy" looks that aren't vampy etc.)

Hannah what would you consider looks labeled as "vampy" that aren't actually vampy?

I'm very familiar with all of the false information about smokey eyes so I'm curious!

Go watch MakeupGeek's "white smoke" tutorial, it's her most recent. Her whole video made me cringe, she kept calling her bright purple lipstick vampy...actually just the whole video is horrifying.

I agree with Hannah, alma did a little fun experiment asking you ladies to find a contour YouTube video and to do it the same way. Thee results are funny! I like to watch YouTube to see how the product applies and nothing else. I don't even trust it for reviews, besides the fact that they are paid review some of them and they are very misinformed. I saw a popular Youtuber rate the Laura mercier creme foundation as horrible because she has oily skin, when its a foundation for normal to dry skin. That's just a little over the top for me, If I buy something and it ends up not being for my skin type I'm not going to give it a bad review.
And I won't even get started on the horrible skin care advice.. Lol.

OH MY. 😂 That purple is definitely NOT vampy at all. Nor is that a smokey eye..

I think the biggest problem with youtube is that all of the "gurus" use buzz words like:

Smokey
Gradient
Vampy
and the dreaded Natural vs. Neutral

So many people use these words interchangeably when they are NOT the same thing. 😐 they clearly don't even know the true definitions of the words!

If it has a dark color, it's automatically smokey eye. If it uses browns, it's automatically a "natural" look. I feel your pain. That video made me cringe as well.

Isn't it awful, Amanda? I just cringed through the whole thing. Olivia, I can't wait to see what you do!

I totally thought the same thing about MakeupGeeks video! She called her makeup a smokey eye and was giving all this incorrect information and I just thought to myself "she's a professional?"

Jul 20, 2014

Hannah K.

The thing is, she's not!! She owns a cosmetic company, but she's in no way a professional. She's not trained.

Oh my god, I watched the "vampy" video... >_< other than her obviousobvious misnaming of products, she contoured with an orange bronzer! Aaaaahhhh.

I wasn't sure about when I was going to post, but now I know, it's going to be tonight, cause I have a cool African music concert tonight! Can't wait! By the way, I loved every look here, there is some huge improvement! :D

*obvious misnaming of techniques

I saw it too... I couldn't watch the whole thing 😝
I was at Nordstorm yesterday and saw some retail ladies 'apply' make up and contour with lots of bronzer 😣
I can't wait to see your post Breeze 😉

I swear we need a disclaimer on BL that says "Welcome to Beautylish! Where a smokey eye is not a gradient eye and contour is not bronzer."

Jul 20, 2014

Hannah K.

Oh boy...Amanda I'd laugh if I didn't think that was a plausible idea! Lol.

Jul 20, 2014

Lizzy W.

Haha Amanda that's a great idea! x) It would certainly lessen the amount of threads on those topics. All we need to add now is, "And where you'd better sure as hell list the products you used."

Jul 20, 2014

Amanda V.

Hahaha yes Lizzy! I forgot that one! 😂

Breeze T.

Lol! It's so true though!

I was thinking of recreating this, from January 2012. Too simple? That night I was extremely proud of my look! -__-'

Aw Breeze you're so cute! Do it I wanna see!!

Jul 20, 2014

Ok here we go!
Products used:
Face/cheeks:
Rimmel fix and perfect primer in 002
Mac Pro longwear concealer in NC35 under eyes, around nose
Vichy dermablend in 35 for my scar
NARS Gilda blush
Clinique almost powder in 03 light to set under eyes and she's nose.
Brows: Make Up for ever aqua brow in shade 25
KIKO eyebrow marker in 01.
Eyes: black pencil - it's a stub, can't remember the brand. I took this pencil and lined my lower lashline with an angled brush.
Tightline and lower waterline with MUFE aqua eyes in black. Smudged everything down and out.
Essence liquid marker eyeliner for my upper lashline - as thin as possibile.
Deborah baked eyeshadow in shade 3, it's a rose gold. Used wet.
Mascara: Debby 100% length extra black.

Lips: KIKO lip stain marker in 103
H&m sheer lip gloss in vivid red (blotted)

The differences are mainly the brows and the fact that I actually used blush and lip products. And powder, I never used to use it.
The look is supposed to be bottom-heavy, that's how I wanted it back then (I was at a club) - I wanted an almond shape eye. Also, now I have no blemishes whatsoever because I'm taking better care of my skin. The technique I used to do my eyes I could remember clearly, and I still like doing that (picking up pencil liner with an angled brush and using a clean one to smudge)

Close up of my eye. Probably the application is more mindful and clean than it used to be.
