Tips from my Hairdresser.

I got my hair coloured and cut today so obviously I took the opportunity to bombard my hairdresser with questions. Here's what I found out:
-The price/ quality of a brush makes very little difference
-Treseme is not a good brand (anymore, she said they were before they were taken over by Unilever, now they aren't a professional product but are still being marketed that way)
-Loreal is not a good brand for haircare (although some of the Loreal Professional range is ok)
-Any market shampoos or conditioners are not good brand of haircare, buy professional quality ones
-You need to shampoo twice with a professional shampoo, once to clean the ends and once to clean the roots
-Put conditioner on from the top of the ears down, putting conditioner on the roots will clog the pores on your scalp and has no benefit to the root hair
-You only need a dime size amount of both shampoo and conditioner
-Heat is the main cause of colour fading, not water
-Drying your hair with a t-shirt instead of a towel isn't a good idea (I can't remember why sorry)
-She likes the Alter Ego brand of shampoo and conditioner
-She likes the Revlon Equave Conditioner Spray
-Conditioner may have mild cleansing agents but it is not a substitute for shampoo, if you are using products they will build up and so will sweat and dirt and you need to cleanse it with shampoo

*Disclaimer: If you disagree with anything feel free to say so but don't ask me to back up any of this or explain any of it. I'm not a hair professional, I know very little about hair and I'm not going to call and ask her lol*
I will say that this is her honest opinion, she wasn't trying to sell me anything we were just having a chat
I hope this helps people, I will add more as I remember :)

Nice. thanks for the tips.
I'd have to disagree with the 3rd tip from the bottom. While heat is the main cause of fading in hair, water also is as well. If you let your hair sit, in even the coldest of water, it'll run like CRAZY..which essentially means it's going to fade just as fast as if you were using heat

She told me that heat opens the pores in your hair which causes the colour to run, which is why hot water, straightners, etc.will cause colour to fade quicker
Again I'm not a professional so I have no idea what I'm talking about :)

Yes that's correct lol heat is just as bad! thank you though, I always love when people share stuff like such.

No problem, I like to ask professionals a lot of questions and may as well share the knowledge when I can :)

Thanks so much for this! The only one I'd disagree with in a sense is the one about heat vs water. More vibrant colors (like red) from MY experience fade aLOT especially when exposed to water! However, I can see how other colors (like blonde or brown) are more effected by heat! Other than that it's great that you thought of us and thrift to post these!

My pleasure, this community has helped me out so much its only right I try to help back when I can :)
I can see that being a reason! :) I can't speak for her because I didn't ask her to go into detail but I think she meant that heat is a lot worse because I asked if it was true that 60% of colour fading is due to water and colour shampoos won't help that and thats when she told me about heat? So maybe she just meant that your colour will fade much worse in hot water and with straightners on it all the time? I'm not sure, I should have asked I'm sorry :(

Actually, many "high end" hair care products have the same ingredients compared to products which aren't costing that much. I personally prefer using "market" shampoo and conditioner because for example GLISS has put liquid keratin in their products and they work amazing!! :) But of course quite a lot of products contain a high amount of parabens, silicones etc.

So, I would say, check the INC-list when you're trying to decide wether to buy a 20 dollar shampoo or 4 dollar shampoo :)

Nice! thanks for the tips.
I've heard girls on here say that using a t shirt is better than using a towel. also, I could never get away with using a dime size amount of shampoo & conditioner. I have way too much hair for that to even be remotely possible lol.

She said that market shampoo's contain a lot of detergents that aren't great for the hair but they foam so we think they're working. I do try and check ingredients but I don't know what hair needs so it doesn't mean much :) I don't mind a little silicone in my haircare because it makes it easier to brush it and makes it look shiney, just not too much :)
I know Kat! I was shocked when she said dime for conditioner too because I use a TON of conditioner lol

I'm a hairdresser and I agree with most of the about apart from professional quality shampoos are better, I do disagree on that.

Fair enough :)

'Buy professional quality ones' seems like her trying to just make you spend more money I've been using drugstore shampoo for years no prob.

Aug 12, 2014

Caitriona H.

Why would she try to make me spend more money when I wasn't buying anything from her? She was just recommending me products she uses herself and likes, she doesn't even sell anything or advertise brands in her shop.

Aug 12, 2014

Rissa G.

She said there was no discussions about transactions being made, it was simply just a Q&A.

I have my opinions and that's mine so.

Not you just in general IMO is what I was meaning.

Aug 12, 2014

Caitriona H.

I'm going to take it that your opinion is that market shampoos is no different, which is fine each to their own, but please do not accuse a woman who went out of her way to explain things to me and answer my questions of being false for marketing when I clearly stated she wasn't selling anything.

Aug 12, 2014

Leona S.

I wasn't accusing? Sometimes that IS the case. I said in generallll.

Aug 12, 2014

Caitriona H.

Yeah a lot of times it is the case unfortunately :/, it just bothered me because I went out of my way to say in the description that I wasn't buying anything.
Anyway lets not take up the thread discussing her intent lol :)

No problem, happy to :) hope it helped!

Unfortunately most of those are opinions of the hair salon, using professional care shampoo is usually biased based on the stylist. It's actually unnatural to use shampoos and conditioners. But there are other products that help our hair feel smoother and give us that much wanted shine, although it doesn't make your already dead hair any healthier.

Aug 12, 2014

Caitriona H.

Yeah, everyone has their preferences and different products that works for them, these are what works for her and what she recommends :)
I don't understand what you mean about shampoo being unnatural, yes ok I get the core concept but most things humans do is unnatural now, wearing clothes, cooking meat, being civilised with each other... What products do you mean? Like honey and such?
I do understand what you mean about hair being dead but the products you use can make it strong when it grows, I know its not going to make it alive again :)

I might want to add to this in a few days, maybe a week or two. My aunt's a hairdresser, she's always giving me great advice!
Thanks for this info :)

That would be amazing Breeze if you would! Maybe people can add questions here for you to ask her if they want? :)
