Liquid for me tends to last longer and gives a more defined, bold look. However, if you are going for a smokey eye then pencil tends to be better or even just for a more subtle look.

If you have oily skin or live in a humid area, avoid pencil liners; they will run and smudge. Liquids are good for dramatic lines but try not to sweat too much when wearing it.
I prefer gel liners because they don't smudge in humid weather, you can line your water line with it, and it's pretty water-proof.

Liquid for the lid. But I love the Creme liner. The sephora one is AMAZING. You just gotta buy the bent brush. UD has a really good black liner(:
