I'm sorry I am posting two questions in a row but I didn't want to put them in the same discussion. Any ways how do you make makeup look less cakey/chalky.

What products are you using? Sometimes a bad concealer can make your foundation look cakey in certain spots.
Generally,
1. Lack of PROPER exfoliation & poor skin care prep
Not with beads or scrubs, but a chemical exfoliant. I feel like without a chemical exfoliant, too much dead skin builds up and scrubs do very little compared to a chemical exfoliant. Heavy duty creams can also cause make up look quite cakey, especially since they take more time to absorb. I use heavy duty creams at night if need be. Otherwise, keep your skin care light.
2. Too much product
Too much can look cakey. Work with little product, and layer more if need to be. Sometimes you don't even need to layer more and just apply more product to certain areas where you want extra coverage.
3. Bad products
A cakey concealer can make any good foundation look bad.
Note that the more high coverage a foundation can get, the more of a possibility that it will look like a cake face.
While this isn't true for all foundations, keep in mind that you will have to play with it more. I use a full coverage foundation and adding two drops of oil to it makes it looks very nice on my skin.
4. No blending
Blend, blend, blend.
5.Tools
Sponges usually give a very nice skin like finish, and a flat top kabuki can give a flawless finish as well. Most girls have very good results using sponges, using your fingers can give a nice result as well. If you have dry skin, buffing isn't too ideal if you don't exfoliate as it can pick up dead skin.
6. Foundation for your skin type
Foundation for oily skin, or labels like 'Long wearing' don't really sit too well for dry skin types - looks fine now but once that 'long wearing' effect kicks in later on... very cakey.. I have seen foundations labeled as 'Long wearing' but with no detail on what skin type its for. Make sure you read all labels correctly.
Those are all my guidelines that have helped with my foundation application. Ultimately skin care made the biggest difference as I was using face make up but not even batting my lashes at skin care.
