I'd say purchase some essential brushes from mac even if you get only 2 but its better to have 2 good quality brushes then 10 mediocre ones.

I would ask Jackie. She recommended me a 12 piece eye brush set from BDellium that I'm looking into. It's $56.
The thing is, I hate Real Techniques. Their brushes are dry and scratchy, and they don't pick up product well at all. I was so excited to get them, and then *womp, womp* they were horrible. They have nothing on my Sephora Professionals Brushes. They're cheap, and they perform like it.

Sephora has a really wide variety of brush sets that suit a lot of different needs and price ranges, if you want a basic collection for $60 I like the look of this one http://www.sephora.com/deluxe-antibacterial-brush-set-P197107?skuId=1032911 or this one http://www.sephora.com/perfect-pink-brush-set-P387688?skuId=1584085 (this one is $68). As a disclaimer though while I do have a view brushes from Sephora that I like, I haven't tried out these specific sets so I can't vouch for their quality so you might want to check out some reviews if you consider buying them.

If anything make sure you have a few essential brushes, not just a whole set where you may not even use all the brushes. I LOVE my angled MAC brush #217, it's worth every penny just like all the other MAC brushes!
