Okay. I've done this a number of times and I always manage to make it work.
Get your mullet trimmed often. it's going to look shorter, but it'll be neater. That's the worst part about growing out a pixie. Then, you may want to experiment with bobby pins, small clips, gel and hairspray. Pin the sides back, make a bouffant in the front, make space buns, whatever goes! And finally, I usually keep it trimmed to a point when I go to the salon and get a short bob, shaved in the back and a short fringe. :)

From there it's all downhill, a bob is probably the easiest way to go past the awkward stage flawlessly. Another option would be to shave the sides - but you need to like that punky look :)
