Nowadays most people consider "beauty" to be;
having long luscious hair, being model skinny, having tanned glowing skin, being tall etcetera.
Why? Because, Skinny is portrayed by the media as being attractive (look at models) and people see thick as not having a healthy lifestyle.
Wearing too much makeup makes you fake, and not wearing enough makeup or none at all makes you ugly.
If you're too short, you're stubby.
If you don't have long hair, you're not good enough.
Which I find this perception as being entirely wrong.
If the world didn't consider beauty as a thing, the world would be so much less judgemental. Girls would have so much more self confidence and actually feel beautiful because, they truly are.
How would the world be different if beauty wasn't considered a thing in you're opinion?

I disagree with the "standard beauty" it's different everywhere like I know in some countries being pale is a sign of not working and being of royalty. Being tan meant you worked outside a lot while a pale person stayed in and were waited on. It's obviously not that way in America but in some countries it's like that.

I think that it would almost lessen life, in my opinion, if ALL beauty was just washed away. Now, by this, I don't mean that I think people should have standard of beauty, because they should not. What I'm saying is that if you were unable to admire the beauty in fresh flowers, or the sunset, then I think it would lessen the quality of life. As for beauty in people, I think if we could all come to agreement that EVERYONE is absolutely beautiful, whether they are short or tall, wear makeup or don't, whether they are a size 2 or 20, whether they have long hair or short hair or no hair, they are absolutely beautiful. I really like this thread, it's intriguing!

Ok. Wth. I totally agree. @valerie. I mean, my sister wears no makeup, is short, and pale. And she is beautiful in my eyes. So what if some people are "model pretty" like my other sister. She is pretty, but it has nothing to do with her being skinny, long haired, tan, tall, or anything like that. It's that she is so nice that makes her a beautiful person.

I 1,000,000% agree with you! I think It really would lessen life, we should focus on finding beauty in other things instead of focusing on how we could improve ourselves to fit in. We are all beautiful in our own ways, God couldn't have made us more beautiful than he already has.

That would be awesome! Then everyone would focus more on what's on the inside like personality not what's on the outside!😊Because I know some girls who are sooooo beautiful but their personality is shitty😑 I really don't like that.

Girl, I'm with you on that. I've'e seen some pretty looking girls in my life with thee most disgusting personality! I think it's a bummer too, it doesn't hurt to be nice!

I had a teacher who was once a model ( and a very successful one, foreign magazine covers, paris, names) and from what she described that life, I wouldn't want it.
She says her career bored her.
Everyone was too 'picture perfect' and 'beautiful' by Hollywood standards...so essentially everything was very boring and dull. There was little conversation, and if there was any it was shallow or drama.
She always ended up getting along with any workers at parties instead (servers, waitresses, even the bathroom attendants). So I could only imagine..
If we all looked the same. Perfect, and beautiful by hollywood standards we'd be absolutely boring and dull.
We're far more interesting being ourselves... with every little quirk and flaw.
Being unique makes you more of a person than being 'perfect' does.
Beauty does wash away... we get old. Once you hit that age all you have essentially is your brain for interest.. not the prettiest look or prettiest person. It sucks to even think even without worrying about how beautiful you are, people will still essentially be shallow and dull.

I laughed at the "tanned glowing skin" part cause the rest of the world is hooked on pale, white skin
I would know since I was hooked on that too once and used to use bleaching creams
But yea beauty standards are very awful and should be dismantled because its very much tied into sexist, racist, ableist etc.institutions of power

I want to add something Kitty mentioned about quirks and flaws. To me, it's the individual things that are the most beautiful. Birthmarks, and asymmetrical features, and any other things that defines you as you. Those things that might embarrass you because they label you as different are honestly what I find the most beautiful in people.

I can't even being to explain how true that is Kitty, we would be boring and dull. & if your looking for perfection, you'll never be content is what my mom always told me!
& @Ari, I find that sad to be honest. We shouldn't be hooked on anything, and girl, you're beautiful the way you are! Nobody should have to change because of what society defines beautiful as.
@Regan, that is so true.. I find that the most beautiful things are the smallest things.

Thanks Valerie
Yea it seems so simple to just realize that you're fine the way you are but it's the whole world against your judgement and it can be very hard to fight back
And even when you reach a better place it can still hit you in the face when your grandmother complements you on how light your skin has gotten
She means well but...

Tldr. Sorry I couldn't catch up. But I mean I had a crush on this guy, and when I told my friends, they'd say, "eww, why him!" And it made me so mad. He is one of my best friends. And they were a waist of my time because I don't think pretty and ugly, I think kind and troubled freaks that can't handle human interaction. That wasn't a joke btw. And they haven't been as good of friends to me ever since.

Of course we all wish that the world and people didnt have as many standards for beauty. I mean I have friends that wear hijabs. They always tell me about how hard it is for them in this society to feel confident in themselves when their hair is always covered. All their insecurities tie into the fact that they have to hide their hair due to religious reasons. I get the standards that society creates for being considered beautiful can practically never be met but for others its a lot harder then most.

I read online about this study, this company sent a picture of a model to several different countries and asked them to photoshop the photo to make the model "beautiful" and then email the results back. All the results were completely different.. I wish I had a link it was actually really interesting.

If beauty wasn't a thang or "art" (my passion) then I would have so much more time on my hands. I could read forever and watch so much more starwars and LOTR. I could sleep in and play as much Xbox as I wanted. The end.

Love that response, Makeup Mommy! I did a speech on that very topic (or beauty) and I couldn't agree more.

The world would just be boring. We always have these "what if" moments, but I think that we have to realise that the world is like this for a reason. If there was no standard of beauty, then how would we define beauty? How would we be attracted to somebody? Personalities can only do so much...

Um, some of the things you say are not true. There are bigger models. It's the body structure. Not everyone can be skinny.
Also it depends on where you live. I know a lot of places where wearing no makeup is great. Even the guys asks the girls not to wear makeup. Also hair length does not matter in a lot of places.
Also skin color is different. Yes some places like tan girl and others like girls that are really white.
Really beauty is in the eye the beholder.
Like I know a lot of girls that don't like facial hair on a guy and make them shave it off. I actually love it and I'm more attracted to it. It depends on the person and people. There's a lot more to it.
So it is different from how you are describing it.

If it was a thing that didn't matter than relationships would be more on the personality and how they act but that's normally how they end up anyway.
There would still be people hating each other and fighting because personality clashes and differences in beliefs. If anything, how people see beauty is the least of our worries.

It wouldn't be. There'd be something else that we'd find to measure ourselves. I don't know if that makes sense.
And I guess not beauty bc like others said beauty goes beyond your looks. So I guess you mean physical attractiveness?
