Can you do it at home? What are the benefits vs manual exfoliating? If you can do it at home, how much would it cost me and what would I use?

I'm not sure of the benefits vs manual exfoliating, but I do both. Every two days I'll alternate between The Body Shop Seaweed exfoliator and a homemade olive oil/sugar/honey scrub. The chemical exfoliator I feel cleans my pores out better, but the scrub is better for sloughing off dead skin. I do both at home, and the Body Shop Seaweed Exfoliator cost about $15, which is mid price range. Another good one is the Clinique chemical exfoliator, but it can be more expensive.

Ah thank you so much. I'm 17 and have never had a chemical exfoliant and I feel like I need to. How do you make your scrub, how long does it last and isn't it really messy/sticky?

I make my scrub with Michelle Phan's recipe, which can be found on her website. The amount made with the recipe lasts more than 2 months. It's not horribly messy, as I dissolve the sugar a teeny bit with water before I massage it onto my face. I always shower afterwards to get it off, though you may want to be careful with it coming in contact with your hair if you don't plan on washing it.
