I guess I've never thought about that (they have been red and swollen for as long as I can remember) they arnt browning into the skin so much as the skin has just through the years almost grown over where the tip of my nail should have been. So mabey it's just the nails finally pushing that down?

Yeah I've realized the trick for me to stop, paint my nails every single night so that I don't bite them the next day. If I can't see the dirt under them I'm not obsessed with cleaning them out meaning my nails have some time to get some strength

Maybe they just feel sore because you really want to bite them lol just like me with finger popping. If I feel the need to pop my fingers but I try not to they start to feel tense and stiff. Does that make any sense?

It's probably just your nails recovering from the damage. I would suggest massaging some cuticle oil or tea tree oil into your cuticles. That should help :)
