What should I put on under lipstick to keep it from drying over the course of the day and making the awful creases/cracks in my lips - made noticeable by the lipstick? I've tried Chapstick but that makes the application of the lipstick warped.

Petroleum jelly, maybe? Sorry I'm not much help. I put it on my lips every night before I go to bed and it keeps my lips moisturized and really soft.

I meant more when I'm putting it on but thanks :) I usually brush them when I brush my teeth and then apply Chapstick religiously, it's just that the lipstick dries it out. I know you could say that I could use some of those moisture rejuvenating lipsticks in some makeup lines but I barely like wearing lipstick plus I'm picky with colors so it's a big deal when I do! Haha weird, right?

You could try a lip primer perhaps.

If you are using matte lipstick/stains, those tend to dry out skin. I also do the bulk of my lip moisturizing overnight to keep them as soft and hydrated as possible. Drinking water helps, using Nivea Lip Butter or a hydrating lip scrub (Sugarlips or make your own) should keep them in top shape. I'd exfoliate my lips gently prior to application with a wet, Nubby, cotton washcloth...and alternate my matte and creamy/frosted/shiny lip colors. Licking lips also dries them out quickly. In winter, I apply a light gloss mid-day if my lips feel a little dry, but I need color to stay put.

I've heard petroleum is actually bad for your lips... Try using a different type of lip balm than Chapstick, that's their main ingredient. Try something that lists oils and natural ingredients on the label, like Burt's Bees. If you go to markets and places like that with hand made products, they usually have lip balms like that. Those types will actually help HEAL your lips so you actually don't need it as often, rather than just relief for the time it's on. :)

To answer your question, I think it'd be okay to put chap stick OVER your lip color. I use a stain, and it works awesomely. If you use lipstick, you could probably just dab the balm on top to moisten it up again :)

Use a more "natural" lip balm like Jessica suggested. I hate Chap Stick with a passion.
Throughout the day you can apply a little more balm on top too to keep it looking fresh.
