I'm going purple (from red) on the 10th and I've been researching ways to keep the color (besides your usual cold water, infrequent wash with sulfate-free shampoo) and I watched a video where a girl said she uses a shampoo for blondes because it has purple pigments in it. Anyone know if there's any truth to this? I'm sure it works for her but I'm not sure if there's an actual science behind it or if she's just lucky.

I would just mix some purple dye in your regular shampoo and conditioner.

It's science - purple conditioner/shampoo is used to keep blonde hair vibrant because the purple pigments cancel out brassiness. If there is no brassiness, the purple pigments have nothing to cancel out against and show up as purple - blondes have to be careful not to use purple toners too much or they can wind up purple. With already purple hair the added pigments will help keep color fresh. Depending on how deep if a purple you have, a purple conditioner (Sally's ion line has a great, super pigmented one) or a veggie dye mixed in with your own conditioner would work.

Yes the purple shampoo works wonders for blonde hair. I used to leave mine in longer so it'd come out lilac :) you can also buy a spray bottle and add your dye (if it's vegan) with water and use that whenever you notice your hair fading. :)
