Stay happy L.

Hi!! I am no where near 40 but my mom is in her 40s and she wears smokey eyes and they look amazing and you think that would look good on you too!

I'm not 40 but I do suggest moisturizing & priming before foundation.

I can't do a smokey :(
I never comes out right. It also melts off my eyes.
I can do mac paint pot in painterly with naked lunch and brown in the crease.
I'm worried too much makeup will make me look older.

I'm nowhere near your age but I recently wanted to learn about makeup for more mature skin and I found these videos by Lisa Eldridge http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f-SZA1tkViU http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tA9UmDnjuIQ
Obviously the first is nowhere near your age but it still helps a lot! Best thing I can recommend is not over powdering.

You definitely aren't :) again I'm not 40, but my mom is and she uses a light tinted moisturizer with a dusting of powder, a bit of berry toned blush, and all matte eyeshadows. I know because I taught her how to do it haha! in my opinion matte eyeshadows are much less again and don't accentuate fine lines and wrinkles as much as shimmer does.

I'm 44! I have found wayne goss tutorial for smokey eye for mature eyes to be very helpful (it's on youtube). I have very crepey skin on my eyes, which means that it gets hooded, and it mostly wipes the eye shadow off. I use a primer, and powder over that and it helps the eye shadow stay on.
I think an entire skin care regime has really helped me. I use Paula's Choice, but there are others, drugstore products and the like, depending on budget.
Things you need to know about skin care over 40: there really isn't that much that can be done outside of a surgery to make you look younger. Manage your expectations and don't go in for the latest miracle this or that. Here is what can be done though and it can make a difference: sunscreen. The sun will age you faster than anything. Always wear sunscreen, even when it's not sunny. Look for a foundation or BB cream with SPF included.
Moisturize: When you plump up your skin with moisturizer, it temporarily fills in wrinkles and lines. This is what botox does as well, but putting on moisturizer is a lot less scary and a lot cheaper. I do a heavy moisturizer at night and two layers of day moisturizer in the morning, the second layer emphasizing any dry patches and the area under my eyes which fills in an eye bag I have. You can get good moisturizers at the drugstore.
Exfoliate: exfoliating does three things, one it clears out dead skin cells which gives your skin a brighter more youthful appearance, and two, it speeds up your skins cycle of regeneration and can increase the production of elastin (which is the stuff that keeps your skin from sagging, you naturally produce less elastin when you age). Exfoliation will also help get rid of some surface sun damage and brown spots. You can physically exfoliate (masks and scrubs that take dead skin off) or chemically exfoiliate. Though chemical exfoliant sounds scary it's actually gentler on the skin and won't stir up inflammation on your face. It can be as simple as using Apple Cider Vinegar.
Retinol: this is a compound your body uses for skin, teeth and bones. You produce it naturally. Some skin care products for older skin have retinol. Be warned though that it is extremely sensitive to oxidation, so if you buy something with retinol it should come in a pump or a tube, otherwise it will get exposed to oxygen and be useless. I don't bother with retinol products, because I've seen very good results with the other three angles of attack.
Antioxidants: I use a daily moisturizer that has antioxidants. I like it as a moisturizer that's why I use it. Frankly I'm skeptical about how much they actually help keep you looking young.
When I turned 40 I went on a cruise and I went to a spa day. They trotted out this line of extra expensive skin care products to combat aging. It was stuff like crushed pearls and wombat blood. Some of the products were $100 a tube. I went out of there so angry because I felt like I was being manipulated and sold product when really I just wanted a relaxing facial. That was such an eye opener. The older you are, the more this pressure to sell you youth increases. The beauty industry is just evil this way.

Definitely not the oldest, I've seen older woman on here, it doesn't matter what age, were all on here because we have one thing in common & that's out like for beauty.

I'm here to say you can wear shimmer over 40 Molly! You can! You need to prime the lid. Also this is where high end eye shadows really pay off. Cheap glitter will fall out into fine lines around the eyes and age you. Good powder eye shadows like Inglot and MAC will not do this. Also creme eyeshadows are really great. My mom is 75 and she wears glittery creme eyeshadows from Avon and they don't fall out on her.

Also you can use illuminating primers to get some shimmer before you put on your matte eye shadows. I think illuminating skin products are wonderful when you are older because they restore that youthful glow.

I'm not over 40 but my mom is and she just uses a BB cream, powder, some concealer (if she needs it), eyeliner, mascara, blush, and lipstick. And that's if she's going full face. Otherwise she normally will just do a few of those things. Hope I helped :)

So Molly what does your mom use for products?

Is concealer really only good for younger women?
I have tried numerous brands but it seems to always enhance the fine lines and crepe. Better to just use moisturizer I guess.

I really like the Inglot matte shadows. They are very pigmented and smooth with no fallout problems. I also have some of their pearl shadows which have some shimmer, but aren't too over the top with glitter.

Are most if you guys from the UK?
There is no inglot in canada anymore.

Per-fekt tinted Eye Perfection Gel is a great alternative to concealer. Often dry skin is the culprit when it comes to creasing. Hydrate those eyes with Jojoba oil and Mario Badescu's Hyaluronic Eye Cream. If your skin runs dry, you can either pass on powder or switch to a light mineral powder. Using a hydrating primer is also helpful. :)
